The UK’s municipal water supply is among the best in the world and we all take it for granted, however We examine what’s really in the tap water we drink every day. Due to the hard minerals still being present in the water, scale inhibition isn’t suitable for all applications. Instead, water softening using a process such as ion exchange is usually recommended in water areas with alkalinity levels of 180ppm or more (very hard water) and applications where water is kept at a constant temperature of 95°C or more. Wirecutter is the product recommendation service from The New York Times.
- Community water systems providing water to 100,000 people or more must post the reports online.
- With Aquasana, rest easy knowing that no chemicals are added to your water during thefiltration process.

- Moreover, the design of the LifeStraw filter makes it far more resistant to clogging with sediment than Brita’s—we poured gallons of highly rust-laden water through it without issue.
We also take into account how easy the filter is to set up, how quickly it filters, how heavy the product is when filled (if applicable), how easy it is to clean and more. The basic idea of mechanical filtration is to physically remove sediment, dirt or any particles in the water using a barrier. Mechanical filters can be anything from a basic mesh that filters out large debris to a ceramic filter which has an extremely complex pore structure for ultra-fine filtration of pathogenic organisms. Though it’s billed as a 10-cup model, the Everyday pitcher holds about 11.5 cups, enough for a small household’s daily needs. But because of potential downstream contamination, the only way to know for certain what’s in your home’s water is to get it tested. We looked at 11 of them for our guide and were very impressed with the SimpleLab Tap Score, which is easy to use and delivers a comprehensive, clearly written report on what (if any) contaminants your tap water contains.
How CR Tests Water Filters
If your tap water does exceed EWG health guidelines, it may be a good idea to consider buying a water filter. However, some reverse osmosis systems also remove minerals that some may prefer to leave in, plus the systems tend to be more expensive and less water efficient. With both reverse osmosis and carbon filters, the contaminants they remove can vary widely, so it's best to check what the model actually filters so it suits your needs. The surest way to determine this is by checking which NSF standard the filters are certified for. For example, some standards cover only lead, like NSF 372, while others also include agricultural and industrial toxins, like NSF 401.

If you know you have good-quality tap water—which an at-home test kit can tell you—we recommend the basic Brita Standard Pitcher and Dispenser Filter instead. With only five ANSI/NSF certifications (PDF), including chlorine (but not lead, organic compounds, or emerging contaminants), it is not nearly as well certified as the Elite. But it’s a less inexpensive, less clog-prone filter that can improve your water’s taste. Like virtually all pitcher-type filters, the Elite is vulnerable to clogging, which can reduce its filtration speed or even stop it from filtering entirely, meaning you’ll have to replace it more often. Many, many owners complain of this problem, and in our testing, the Elite began to slow down long before reaching its 120-gallon capacity.
Look at the filter’s packaging for a stamp or seal confirming which contaminants it’s certified to remove. Third-party labs that certify products to NSF/ANSI standards include the National Sanitation Foundation itself, the Water Quality Association (WQA), and the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials (IAPMO). At AQUAPHOR, we design and manufacture reliable and convenient water filters so that you enjoy using them in the kitchen, bathroom or country house — wherever you need clean water.
